Bringing a bird into your
life can be a most rewarding experience. Here are a few
hints on how to provide a good diet. Domestic birds are
totally dependent on what you give them to eat, so be
careful. Check with your veterinarian and use a reliable pet
store when buying your pet food. Pelleted food should be
eighty percent of your bird's diet; large pellets for big
birds and small pellets for little birds. Birds in captivity
tend to put on too much weight and, like us, develop health
problems. Birds are omnivorous, meaning they can eat lots of
different kinds of foods...ie. fruits and vegetables; beans,
corn, spinach, always mixed with fresh pellets. Remember to
wash all veggies and fruits just like you do for yourself.
You can offer your bird almost any healthy food you cook for
yourself. However, there are some things that are forbidden,
including avocado in any form, chocolate alone or in any
treat, alcoholic drinks and caffeinated drinks. All of these
items can be deadly to your pet bird. Seeds are a
treat...keep them that way. Talk to your vet if your not
sure what to do. Get to know reliable pet shop owners and
other bird people. Do some reading at the public library,
but above all, remember your veterinarian is your most
competent source of information. |
